WATERWAYSMarine waterways as a sustainable source of wellbeing, security, and safety

How can the sustainable use of maritime routes be developed and maintained in a constantly changing world amidst evolving risk landscapes, regulatory frameworks, and shifting societal values?

The goal of the WATERWAYS project is to strengthen the long-term positive impacts of maritime routes on well-being, safety, and security in the northern Baltic Sea. By developing innovative data and AI-based methods for monitoring and assessment, examining ecological, social, technological, and legal perspectives, the project produces new tools and knowledge to support strategic planning and decision-making.

The objectives will be pursued through the following measures:

The project is part of the Water for Welfare, Security, and Peace (WAWE) program, funded by the Finnish Strategic Research Council from 2024 to 2030. The projects within the program are developing sustainable and just science-based solutions for the management of water resources and the marine environment, and for strengthening water safety and security.

The WATERWAYS consortium consists of research teams from Aalto University, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Kotka Maritime Research Centre (Merikotka), University of Helsinki, and Åbo Akademi University.
